UC Berkeley was established in 1868 as the flagship campus of the University of California. The campus sits on a 1,232-acre site on the east slope of the Berkeley Hills with views across the bay. Today it enrolls approximately 45,000 students across fifteen colleges and schools, and employs more than 3,000 faculty members. The university operates world-class research facilities and is affiliated with three Nobel Prize-winning scientists currently on faculty.

The campus is home to the Bancroft Library, the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, the University Art Museum, and the botanical gardens. More than a million people visit the campus or the campus-affiliated sites each year. The university is a major employer in Berkeley and the Bay Area, and draws faculty, students and researchers from around the world.

Berkeley families with children often experience the university as a presence in the community: campus events, the botanical gardens, the mix of academics and research that shapes the city's character. For many, education for children is a central financial concern; for others, the university is an employer or a path to advancement. A term life policy sized to cover education costs, mortgage obligations and years of household income is a practical foundation for Berkeley families in all these situations.
